Lumber Types and Applications

Framing Lumber

2×4, 2×6, 2×8 SPF, Douglas Fir

Used for wall framing, floor joists, and roof rafters. Typically graded as Construction, Standard, or Utility.

  • Wall studs and plates
  • Floor and ceiling joists
  • Roof rafters and trusses

Dimensional Lumber

1×4, 1×6, 1×8 Pine, Cedar

Lighter lumber for trim, sheathing, and non-structural applications. Available in various grades and species.

  • Trim and molding
  • Sheathing and subflooring
  • Shelving and furniture

Pressure Treated

All sizes Ground contact rated

Chemically treated lumber for outdoor and ground contact applications. Resistant to rot, decay, and insects.

  • Deck framing and posts
  • Foundation sill plates
  • Outdoor structures

Engineered Lumber

LVL, I-Joists Consistent dimensions

Manufactured lumber products with consistent properties and longer spans than traditional lumber.

  • Long-span floor joists
  • Headers and beams
  • Rim boards

Standard Lumber Sizes

Understanding the difference between nominal and actual lumber sizes is crucial for accurate calculations. Lumber is sold by nominal size but the actual dimensions are smaller due to drying and planing.

Dimensional Lumber (2" Nominal Thickness)

Nominal Size Actual Size Board Feet per Linear Foot Common Applications
2×4 1.5" × 3.5" 0.67 BF/LF Wall framing, studs
2×6 1.5" × 5.5" 1.0 BF/LF Floor joists, headers
2×8 1.5" × 7.25" 1.33 BF/LF Floor joists, beams
2×10 1.5" × 9.25" 1.67 BF/LF Floor joists, headers
2×12 1.5" × 11.25" 2.0 BF/LF Floor joists, beams

Board Lumber (1" Nominal Thickness)

Nominal Size Actual Size Board Feet per Linear Foot Common Applications
1×4 0.75" × 3.5" 0.33 BF/LF Trim, sheathing
1×6 0.75" × 5.5" 0.5 BF/LF Sheathing, shelving
1×8 0.75" × 7.25" 0.67 BF/LF Sheathing, trim
1×10 0.75" × 9.25" 0.83 BF/LF Shelving, trim
1×12 0.75" × 11.25" 1.0 BF/LF Shelving, wide trim

Lumber Calculation Examples

Wall Framing Example

Project: 16' wall, 16" OC studs
Lumber: 2×4 × 8' studs
Quantity: 13 studs + 2 plates

Calculation:

Studs: 13 × 8' × 0.67 BF/LF = 69.68 BF

Plates: 2 × 16' × 0.67 BF/LF = 21.44 BF

Total: 91.12 BF

Deck Joist Example

Project: 12' × 16' deck
Lumber: 2×8 × 12' joists
Spacing: 16" on center

Calculation:

Joists needed: (16' ÷ 1.33') + 1 = 13 joists

Board feet: 13 × 12' × 1.33 BF/LF = 207.48 BF

With 10% waste: 228.23 BF

Fence Project Example

Project: 100' fence, 6' high
Lumber: 1×6 × 6' pickets
Spacing: 6" on center

Calculation:

Pickets needed: 100' × 2 = 200 pickets

Board feet: 200 × 6' × 0.5 BF/LF = 600 BF

With 15% waste: 690 BF
